Two Items to Think About When Pivoting Your Freelance Business
2024 is right around the corner and for some of us, that means changing our business and refocusing our priorities.
In other words…it’s time to pivot! Perhaps that means a rebrand or maybe that means doing something entirely new.
The best part? Girlfriend, this is YOUR business and you can do what you want. If you want to change your business - go for it!
Let’s delve into two critical aspects of pivoting your freelancer business, plus discover how you can leverage the power of self-paced learning with our upcoming group cohort and our online course tailored for independent learners releasing in January 2024.
When Do You Know It's Time to Pivot in a Freelancer Business?
Pivoting is a strategic move that can breathe new life into your freelancing journey. Here are some signs that it might be time to pivot:
Your heart isn’t in it. This one is obvious, but if you find yourself dragging yourself out of bed in the morning and dreading the workday then guess what? That’s a job. And you didn’t get into freelancing so that it becomes another job. Time to think about changing something.
Clients have feedback. Lots of it. Your clients are your best barometer. Listen to their feedback and pay attention to their changing needs. If you consistently hear requests for services outside your current offerings, it’s time to think about changing it up, or at the very least, maybe hiring people to help with those demands.
Growth has plateaued. If your freelance business has plateaued, it's a sign that something needs to change. Whether it be in your salary or the amount of clients you can take on, if you want to grow, it’s time to reassess. Maybe it’s time to hire so that you can take on more clients or maybe it’s time to look at your rates and see how your skills have grown, therefore leading to higher fees.
Market trends are changing. Honestly, this is a big one with AI right now. A lot of copywriters have found themselves out of work and have had to re-evaluate. AI is going to affect a lot of jobs - will yours be one of them? Better to prepare now and have some other plans.
How to Let Clients Know of a Rebrand or Change in Your Freelancer Business
Clear communication is vital to maintaining client relationships during a pivot. Sometimes you want to keep the same clients and change your fees, other times you need to let them go and find new clients.
I always recommend letting clients know via video call. It shows respect for them and their business.
However, sometimes that’s not always possible and you want to make the announcement via email. Sign up for my newsletter to get two FREE templates that I’ve used in the past when I’ve rebranded my business.
