Part II: How do you continue to stay motivated as a freelancer?
Earlier this month, we went into five ways you can stay motivated as a freelancer. This month, we’ll go into Part II - how to keep yourself motivated in a long term way that you may not have thought of.
1. Continuously Learn and Grow
Stagnation can lead to demotivation. Keep your freelance journey exciting by consistently learning new skills and expanding your knowledge. The internet and technology is constantly evolving. If you stagnate on your extended learning, you stagnate your career and someone will choose you over another person. Popular options include taking online courses and attending webinars, but even networking with other freelancers is a great way to grow. Embracing growth keeps your work fresh and your motivation alive.
2. Create an Inspiring Workspace
Your work environment has a significant impact on your motivation. Design a workspace that is comfortable, organized, and inspiring. (I know, sometimes it’s easier said than done. I go through stages of making it beautiful and then clutter happens all over again). Personal touches, good lighting, and a clutter-free environment can contribute to a positive mindset and higher motivation levels.
3. Stay Connected
Freelancing can sometimes feel isolating. Stay connected with fellow freelancers, clients, and industry peers through social media, online forums, or networking events. Engaging with others in your field can provide a sense of community, support, and fresh perspectives.
About five years into my freelancing career, I realized how lonely I was. I basically only talked to my two year old daughter and my husband for a few hours in the evening. I decided to create a meetup where I invited other freelancers and work-from-homers out to lunch one day of the month. I made sure to choose a day that I had childcare and picked different locations in the area. I had anywhere from seven to 15 people show up! It was refreshing to talk to others without the pressure of “networking” and commiserate with how lonely it was at times. Unfortunately, I never picked it up again after COVID, but I remember those days fondly and I’m glad I took the initiative.
4. Create a Consistent Routine
One of the benefits of freelancing is the flexibility to create your own schedule. However, too much flexibility can lead to inconsistency and a lack of motivation. While it would be nice to head to the beach every day, or do home renovation projects 4 days a week, it can lead to motivation flagging. One of the best things I did early in my freelance career was actually “getting dressed” in the morning. I stopped wearing sweats and comfortable clothing. By dressing even in jeans, it helped my mind shift into a working mode. I had set times I walked the dog as well.
Now, my days revolve around when the kids are dropped off and when they’re picked off. If it’s a day I have my toddler home with me, I know that is a more flexible working day where I do “fun” things.
Establishing a daily routine that includes designated working hours, breaks, and personal time can help create structure and prevent burnout.
5. Practice Self-Care
Your well-being directly impacts your motivation. Prioritize self-care by getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and practicing relaxation techniques. When you feel physically and mentally well, you're more likely to approach your work with enthusiasm. YOU DO NOT WANT TO GET BURNED OUT. Yes, it happens even to solopreneurs. It’s tempting to work all the time because we can. There is no physical separation from home and office. Try to put your laptop in a different room. If you can’t do that, completely shut it off at night. Schedule time to completely unplug. I’ve found unplugging makes me more creative.
Freelancing offers incredible freedom and autonomy, but it requires a proactive approach to staying motivated. By setting clear goals, establishing routines, celebrating wins, and nurturing your well-being, you can maintain your motivation levels and build a successful and fulfilling freelance career. Remember that motivation is not a constant state; it's a skill you can cultivate and strengthen over time.
