Stay Amazing as a Freelancer: Small Gestures, Big Impact
Create SOPs/Manuals
This is a given, but you’d be surprised how many freelancers do not do this. They just do their role and create no clear SOP of what they’ve done, making it extremely difficult for the client if they move on. By creating an SOP or manual, you are showing your client that you care enough about their business to set them up for success in the future too.
Welcome Kits
It’s awesome to feel loved. Trust me. And a Welcome Kit if you’re a long term service provider is the extra special touch. Consider sending your clients a welcome kit filled with goodies, resources, and personalized touches to kick off your partnership on a high note. A well-curated welcome kit sets a positive tone from the start.
Holiday and Birthday Gifts
Have freelancers gotten lazy? This is one of the BEST ways to stay top-of-mind. When you show your clients that you care by acknowledging special occasions like holidays and birthdays, they feel extra loved. They don’t feel like it’s a one-way street where all they do is pay you for a job well done. You also are saying “I recognize you and appreciate that you provide towards my livelihood so I’m spending money on you.” A small gift or heartfelt message goes a long way in strengthening your relationship and making your clients feel valued and appreciated.
Charity Giving
Not good with gifts? Totally fine. One of the best things I ever did in my freelance business was to thank clients by saying I would donate some money in their name to a charity of their choice or give them 3 charities to choose from. This fosters a sense of community and shared values and it's a great way to bond with your clients outside of the business context and make a positive impact together.
Annual Recognition
Long term freelancers - this is for you! Take the time to recognize and appreciate your clients' loyalty and support on an annual basis. Whether it's a thank-you note, a shout-out on social media, or a special discount or incentive, acknowledging their contributions strengthens your bond and encourages continued partnership. By showing gratitude for their ongoing support, you reinforce the value of your relationship and cultivate loyalty for years to come.
It’s often the little things that leave the biggest impression in client relationships. If you are not using advice like this to create an amazing client experience, then you’re not differentiating yourself. You’re just another person getting the job done.Take a moment to implement one of these ideas today. Your clients—and your business—will thank you for it.
