Why you need a Webpage as a Freelancer and not rely on Social Media

As a freelancer, you know the importance of having a strong online presence to attract clients and showcase your skills.

Can you have ONLY a strong social media profile?

Absolutely.

Do I recommend it?

No.

If I had to choose between the two, I would say the website is more important.

While social media platforms offer a convenient way to connect with potential clients, relying solely on them may limit your brand visibility. Let’s explore why having your own webpage as a freelancer is essential and why it's worth investing in beyond social media.

In my coaching, I often compare your website to your store front. If you are living online and have a business online, when people type your business name into google, it’s good to have your website pop up, dontyathink?

A website…

Establishes Credibility and Professionalism

A dedicated webpage lends credibility and professionalism to your freelance business. Unlike social media profiles, which can be cluttered with personal updates and distractions, your website serves as a polished storefront that showcases your expertise and experience. Potential clients are more likely to trust and engage with freelancers who present themselves professionally through a well-designed website.

Control Over Brand Identity

With your own webpage, you have complete control over your brand identity and messaging. You can customize the design, layout, and content to accurately reflect your unique style and personality. Even if you use a template, you can still customize it to reflect your freelancer brand.

Enhanced Discoverability

While social media can help you connect with existing contacts and followers, it's not the most effective platform for expanding your reach to new audiences. Search engine optimization (SEO) techniques can significantly boost your website's visibility on search engine results pages (SERPs), making it easier for potential clients to discover you when they're actively searching for services in your niche. By optimizing your website for relevant keywords and creating high-quality content, you can attract organic traffic and expand your client base beyond your social media network.

For instance, if you’re a copywriter for small businesses, having those words sprinkled throughout your homepage will boost the chances that you’ll be found in a google search. Similar to how if you’re a website designer for female entrepreneurs - those will also help boost your website, unlike a social media profile unless it’s very, very clear.

Showcase Your Portfolio and Services

If you’re a project freelancer in the artistic space, having a website to show off your art is a huge benefit. You can have samples for anyone to see or you can also password protect some of your website for only others to view.

Your website serves as a centralized hub for showcasing your portfolio, testimonials, and services. Unlike social media platforms, your website allows you to present your work in a structured and organized manner. You can create dedicated pages for each project, complete with detailed descriptions and images, providing potential clients with a comprehensive overview of your capabilities and past successes.

While I believe 10000% that social media platforms play a valuable role in networking and client engagement, they shouldn't be the sole focus of your online presence as a freelancer. By having in a professional webpage, you can establish credibility, control your brand identity, expand your visibility, and showcase your portfolio effectively. Your website becomes a powerful marketing tool that complements your social media efforts, enabling you to reach new audiences, attract high-quality leads, and grow your freelance business in the digital age.
